FROM DRUMS TO HARP: The Story of Drummer and Harpist Robert M. Garcia offers highlights in the life of a unique American musician of Afro-Cuban descent.
A professional drummer from the age of 17, Robert Garcia attended Florida A&M University (FAMU) in Tallahassee, Florida, and later studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. During his freshman and sophomore years at FAMU (1968-1970), he was on the drum line of the world famous band, the FAMU Marching 100. Through the years, Garcia became widely known as a master drummer. Late in his career, however, he switched to the grand harp as his preferred instrument. His reasons for the switch and why it was unusual and difficult are in this book, along with other highlights from his life story --- a story enhanced by photos, as well as quotes from musicians and music educators.
